Best wishes you all, in these trying and raucous times. It looks like we made it through Thanksgiving in one way, shape, form or the other...I ran across an article that brought back memories to me. The article was about digging in or- more precisely, eating out of the trash. We did this in an economics course at Moorpark College in CA. in the early days in the 70's. Practicioners these days are considered-to one degree or another-freegans http://freegan.info/
here is another point of view...http://www.ksusentinel.com/media/paper402/news/2004/11/17/News/Scavengers.Take.Free.Food.From.Trash.Bins.Deliver.Message-825227.shtml
I was always amazed at the bounty of food that we would come up with. The basic staples, bread, vegtables and fruits, canned goods, mostly thrown in the trash because of their looks!!! ( how shallow of us!) That was before Safeway had compactors, and that was all the farther you had to go. These days specialty shops-bakeries, restaraunts, etc. are better haunts. I guess what intrigues me about this is that most folks that practice this seem to be fanatical about it....what I mean to say is-it's not just a hobby, something fun to do-like some of us go to the movies-it seems to be a life-style choice. I don't think any of my 5 kids would find it "fun" or something that they would do as a hobby, or be attracted to it accept to read about. I remember some of the fun for Scott and Dan and I was the possiblity of getting caught..."hey, what do you think you're doing eating free out of that trash can !!!" Scott and Dan Young.my tripping friends....the one's who turned me on to Pink Floyd and a few other things...stories for other times...but I think there will always be a bit of freegan in my soul...maybe even a bit of a vegan...in a leftist sort of way...Wikipedia has an interesting discription of freeganism ...
