The preparation has begun, it seems, for a letdown. This would have promised to be an interesting game of chess, if it weren't for the fact that people's lives-thousands of peoples lives-are at risk o an hourly basis... Today Britian's Treasury chief told anti-poverty campaigners to be prepared to be disappointed, just as Live 8 organizer Bob Geldof headed to Edinburgh, Scotland, continuing to step up pressure on G-8 summiteers to end poverty in Africa by substantial increases in aid, dept relief, and opening free trade. Geldof quickly responded that the British government should not be " lowering the bar" of what the G-8 summit can achieve at the upcoming meeting in Gleneagles on Wednesday. And, so, now, "We" (We, for all intents and purposes, being the world as a whole) have been put in a position that, for all intents and purposes, any concessions we are offered should be viewed as a gift. and the only work left for us is finding an attitude of gratitude for any small bauble we may recieve. Problem with all this is, I don't believe Bob Geldof ever had any intentions of compromise, or "finding a middle ground" with the members of G-8. Half measures avail us nothing...there is only one answer.. relieve debt, increase aid, open trade. that's it. you do that, or you do nothing...
But we can pretty well expect the world leaders to do thier best to manipulate all venues possible to thier benefit, and any riot or violence during demonstrations will be to thier benefit, in that it will be an excuse to not cow to "terrorism and violence". Yes, some "carrots" will be extended...will we take them ? Once again we will take what we are offered, but I don't know if we will sit down and shut up again, this time. In the looking-glass world of world politics, where smoke and mirrors are accepted as normal and used frequently, It's easy to make excuses, to blame others, to make excuses... I wonder, if the G-8 leaders had a list of names, a list of the people that are destined to die of starvation and disease in Africa, and they had to check off the names and number of people that would die, if that would alter thier choices. Geldof , and most of the rest of us, I believe, find the only acceptable answer to how many is 0. What numbers the summiteers come up with, who knows...
