I'm so glad to see that Live 8 appears to have been a huge success.http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/_/id/7467460/paulmccartney?pageid=rs.Home&pageregion=single1
In a less than a week we will see just how much of an effect this concert will have had on the way the the world "works" and whether there will be a change in mind-set for the members of the G-8, allowing the poorest people in the world to gain a foothold in their daily struggle for survival, competition for profits in a most direct sense... Forgiving other countries' debts levels the playing field somewhat, allowing them to directly compete for the clientele that brought the wealthier country it's weath-and helps sustain it...a pretty gutsy-and humbling- choice-especially now, thanks to Live 8 having the world poised on the edge of it's collective seat to see if the world's desires will be reflected in the choices-or lack of- those 8 world leaders make in the next few days... And in the meantime I am trying (and hope you are, as well) to find something I can do to help. I am in the process of contacting Ox-fam with an offer. You see, for the last 10 years or so I have been using "rippers" or "tailings" that we have left over when milling our wood, and have been cutting it up for kindling to use in our pot-belly stove, as well as bundle it up so my kids can sell it out on the highway for $3.00 a bundle. This wood can be anywhere from 5 to 50 millimeters square. What I and other employees at the shop don't cut up gets taken the landfill. There have been many years that this kindling was our primary source of heat through the winter (and we have some cold winters !!!) What I want to do is box it up, send it(for free with the help of Federal Express, U.P.S or some other volunteer) get it to Africa and then to....Malawi ?...http://www.time.com/time/archive/preview/0,10987,1034738,00.html or some needy area to be disbributed for firewood. In some of those areas, firewood for cooking and other personal uses can use 60% of the money these folks make by growing and selling vegetables, etc. If this wood, which otherwise would take up huge spaces in our landfill, could be distributed honestly, wisely, and efficiently, it would bee a boon to many areas with a shortage of resources of this nature...I'm sure that even the cardboard packaging-or-whatever-would be reused in a productive manner... (necessity will always be the Mother of Invention !!!) [capitalized out of admiration and respect for Frank Zappa]
